UAE FILIPINOS BAG OVERALL CHAMPIONSHIP IN GCC BOWLING TOURNAMENT: Uella Marcial Scores Perfect Game

The United Filipino Bowlers of UAE in Dubai bagged the overall championship trophy during the 9th edition of the GCC All-Filipino Bowling Tour held at Dubai Bowling Centre over the weekend.

The four-day tournament was hosted by the Dubai Filipino Bowling Club whose men’s and ladies’ teams triumphed in unequaled fashion during the games, dodging competition from other GCC participants - Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Al Khobar, Jeddah and Riyadh of Saudi Arabia - to capture the most coveted trophy.

With a total Gold Medal haul of eight comprising 3 from the men’s events and 5 from the ladies division, in addition to Silver and Bronze medals, the UFB-UAE Dubai bowlers easily romped off with the Overall Champion’s Trophy in an absolutely amazing and decisive performance.

Leading the onslaught were the formidable men’s and ladies’ teams of the UFB-UAE’s Dubai Filipino Bowling Club. The men’s Team A had in their line-up the club’s ace player George Manozo, Jordan Evan, Roland Detaro, Ed Sakkam, Danny Torres and Ricky Reyes. The ladies’ Team A also had a solid line-up in Uella Marcial, Clarisse Corpuz, Elsie Marcial, Liza Lugto, Rachel Lapig and Tess Victoria. From the Team Event played on Day 1, the champions’ gold medals for both divisions were safely tucked away by both teams, followed by more gold from the ladies Trios and Doubles events played the next day and more gold yet again in the All Events and Masters Events for both divisions on the final day of the tournament.

The Men’s All Events Champion is George Manozo, while the Masters Champion is Ricky Reyes of the same team. Ricky Reyes joined this GCC tournament for the first time, and he did it in style by clinching the tournament’s highest individual event.

In the ladies’ division, Uella Marcial emerged the All Events Champion and back-to-back Masters Champion, successfully defending her Masters title from last year’s tournament in Bahrain. This is an achievement recorded as a first in the tournament’s history since no other Masters Champion has defended his title until this year. She also scored the first perfect game (300) ever bowled in the nine-year history of this GCC All-Filipino Bowling Tour.

This tournament is held annually and in rotation among GCC member countries. Total prizes are at an all-time high since this tournament started in 1998, and competition is also at its highest level with a record number of participating teams. The Organizing Committee left no stones unturned to host such a grand tournament with the biggest prize purse so far. The committee is chaired by DFBC President Dante Herras, ably assisted by VP & Tournament Director Mario Magdaluyo, Overall GCC Coordinator & Technical Committee Chairperson Elsie Marcial and Irene Serrano for Sponsorship.

This year’s tournament is supported by Western Union, BenQ-Siemens, ABS-CBN-The Filipino Channel, Star Studio Magazine, Pernod Ricard Gulf, Skills Advertising, The Bowler International, Lane #1, PICPA Dubai Chapter, Mediacom International, Philippine National Bank, PCI Equitable Bank, DMCI Homes, Nature-Fil Trading, Frico International, Ratsky Club, Dante’s Peak, Reuters, and several donors and benefactors who have contributed to a successful tournament.

The ceremonies were graced by the presence of H.E. Philippine Ambassador Libran Cabactulan who declared the championships open, Consul General Antonio Curameng, Philippine Embassy officials and sponsors.

Next year’s tournament will be hosted in Kuwait.
